Consumer durable manufacturer Godrej Appliances is working on a technology that might reduce energy consumption of room air conditioners by about 80 per cent.

Consumer durable manufacturer Godrej Appliances is working on a technology that might reduce energy consumption of room air conditioners by about 80 per cent. The new design comprises highly optimised vapour compression cooling system integrated with advanced evaporative cooling technology and solar photovoltaic.

“We expect to develop the prototype of the domestic cooling system by April 2020 and will put it for trial run in Delhi and NCR region by October next year. If all goes well, the model will be launched in the market in next two to three years,” said Kamal Nandi, business head and executive vice president, Godrej Appliances.

As a part of a competition conducted by the global coalition of the Ministry of Science and Technology and Rocky Mountain Institute, the company is working on a concept that will help slash energy consumption and make the product affordable as well.

“Such a solution would provide affordable cooling access, which has become a critical necessity in hot climate regions around the world. However, the challenge is to create a product where price will be capped at 1.5X and also keep it compact,” added Nandi.

The company also plans to apply for patent protection for the technology. Further, the firm is also working on a prototype that will help slash energy usage by one-fifth in case of room air conditioners, this is also a part of the above mentioned competition.

Moreover, a team is working on the concept at Godrej’s Pune research and development centre. The company is among eight other finalists which are working on this technology. Further, this is the only Indian company to be short-listed for the competition.

“The demand for room air conditioner is expected to touch one billion by 2050 from current 6.5 million. In the first two quarters of the current fiscal, the demand for air conditioners grew by 30 per cent and further supposed to go up,” Nandi further said.

Air conditioners and cooling systems are power guzzlers. An increase in demand for air conditioners, in turn, will put an upward pressure on the energy generation, leading to higher emissions. About 50 per cent of the energy generated is being used for air conditioners consumption.

The emission report by the United Nations Environment Programme states that the global greenhouse gas emissions for the year 2018 stood at 55.3 giga tonnes of Carbon dioxide equivalent emission.And if the emissions continue at this rate, the average temperature in India will shoot up from about 24°C to about 28°C by 2100.

This further stresses the urgency for an improved cooling efficiency technology for all, without warming the planet.

US-based wearable major Garmin has launched its Fenix 6 series — a rugged smartwatch line up designed for explorers at a starting price of Rs 79,990.

According to the company, the new Fenix 6 series focuses on enhancing users’ outdoor experience with special emphasis on mountain biking, golfing, trail running, hiking, hunting, diving or using satellite communication.

The Fenix 6X Pro Solar from the line up is designed with “Power Glass” which is a transparent solar charging lens that uses the sun’s energy to extend battery life.

“We are thrilled to announce the new solar edition in the Fenix series which will be a game changer in the smartwatch industry. U.S. scientists are currently developing a brand new type of PV cell, dubbed thermophotovoltaics cell (STPV), which can power drones for several days of flight. This is a far cry from the existing battery-powered drone models which have a cruising ability of less than 30 minutes.

The PV cell differs from the existing models significantly, in terms of structure, operating method, and cost.

STPV contains an absorber and an emitter, on top of a PV cell. Consisting of nano-carbon tubes, the absorber absorbs sunlight which boosts temperature gradually to the ultra-high level of 1,000 °C before transmitting the heat to the emitter, which is made of silicon or rare earth. The emitter can emit magnetic waves at a specific wavelength for full absorption by the PV cell below.

According to the STPV research team of the University of California, Berkeley, the outlook for STPVs is optimistic. Eli Yablonovitch, a professor at the university’s Department of Electrical Engineering, pointed out that with a sophisticated structure and high efficiency, STPVs boast a wide range of applications. This includes the small 100 W model which is used for powering drones and the ultra-large 100 MW model which is capable of supplying the power needs of 36,000 households.

In order to enhance the conversion rates of the PV cell, the research team is currently experimenting with the installation of a reflective mirror on the reverse side of the cell, which can produce high-energy photons and enhance power output to significantly boost STPV efficiency.

The team has also successfully produced a simple golden mirror which is capable of increasing the thermophotovoltaic efficiency to 29%; with the coating of a dielectric layer, the thermophotovoltaic efficiency of the cell can be raised even further, to 36%. It can even hit 50% with the improvement of the PV cell itself, which is a far cry from the existing level of 23%, according to the team.

Q CELLS continues to earn market leadership to date

Q CELLS was recently recognized by leading energy research and consultancy firm Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables (“Wood Mackenzie”) as the number one residential module provider in the industry for Q1 2019, according to data from its Q2 2019 U.S. PV Leaderboard report, following its residential market leadership in 2018.

All the 18 carts worth a total of INR 7,20,000/- were donated to vegetable vendors today in Hyderabad. In the 13th Global Green Energy Leaders Dialogue held during the exhibition, Dr. Liyou Yang, general manager of Jinergy, delivered a keynote speech titled Driving toward and beyond grid parity, and during the panel discussion, he mentioned, “Technology innovation is the key to grid parity and a more matured PV industry. At the 4th Jinergy Developers Forum (JDF 2019), Gaofei Li, technical director of Jinergy, addressed Jinergy’s achievement in details. Both of Jinergy’s regular high efficiency modules (polycrystalline and PERC monocrystalline) demonstrate very low degradation by optimizing coating and passivation process, as well as strict raw material and process control. With demonstrated extremely low degradation and PID in Datong PV application front runner phase I, Jinergy’s polycrystalline modules bring more benefits for investors. Moreover, with bifaciality of 78%, Jinergy PERC dual-glass bifacial module generates 5%-25% more power from backside. Power generation and LCOE are significantly optimized.

To bring breakthrough to LCOE and realize grid parity, Jinergy also prepares HJT super-high efficiency module. Featuring bifacial power generation, excellent low light performance, ultra-low temperature coefficient and degradation, overall power generation of Jinergy HJT module is increased by 44% when compared to regular polycrystalline modules. Currently, Jinergy HJT cell average mass production efficiency reached 23.79%, and efficiency of new experimental cells reached 24.73%. Tested by TUV Rheinland, module efficiency of Jinergy’s HJT modules reached 21.9% and bifaciality reached 93%

Right before the exhibition, Jinergy received its third China Top 20 Solar Panel Enterprises Award and second APVIA Technological Achievement Award.

    Sweden’s solar market has grown tremendously in the past few years. Its operational PV capacity increased from 231 MW at the end of 2017 to 411 MW at the end of last year, according to new official statistics released by the Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten). The figures show that 2018 was the country’s best year ever in terms of solar energy development, with 180 MW added to the grid. That contrasts with 91 MW in 2017 and just 13 MW in 2016, while in 2015 and 2014 the country added around 37.6 MW and 36.2 MW, respectively.

    According to the Global Market Outlook for Solar Power published recently by SolarPower Europe, Europe’s solar market is expected to grow exponentially.  Germany will remain the largest PV market in Europe for years to come, with an expected newly installed solar capacity of 26.7 GW by 2023, bringing its total capacity to 72.6 GW. Spain will be the second-biggest market with new additions reaching 19.4 GW and its cumulative total hitting 25.3 GW by the end of the 2019-2023 period.

    Over the next five years, the Netherlands, France and Italy will likely add 15.8 GW, 13.3 GW and 9.6 GW, respectively. They will be followed by Ukraine and Turkey, with 5.9 GW and 5.5 GW of respective projected growth.

    Luo said, the cast-mono was very popular and attracted lots of interest from visitors during the exhibition. The company had already received many orders from European clients, and expected to see 1GW sales this year.

    He indicated that the company’s overseas sales will account for 80 percent this year, an increase from 52 percent in 2018. Currently, both European and American markets have an increasing demand. In particular, regions along the Belt and Road routes are experiencing a significant demand increase, representing 40-50 percent annual growth.

    In order to respond to increasing demands, GCL System plans to produce 6.5-7.0 GW of mono modules, for the first time exceeding its multi-crystalline products this year, said Luo, adding that the company will make more efforts to enhance the performance of cast-mono in the future.

    Berlin, 16 May 2019 Off-grid solar module manufacturer OPES Solutions is presenting a new standard solar module for mobile applications such as rental bikes at Intersolar 2019. The new impact and moisture resistant OPES PPS module is around 60% lighter and around 88% thinner than conventional solar modules. An embedded BMSC (Battery Management System Communication) chip ensures fast and easy integration into mobile systems. The front side material is dust-repellent and insensitive to scratches.

    Fast growing bike sharing market

    The volume of the bike sharing market reached over 23 million bicycles by mid-2018, with an annual growth rate of more than 20 percent. A solar module integrated in the rental bicycle gives rental companies the option of integrating communication technology and electronic locks into the bicycles and locating them.

    “In vertically growing cities such as Shanghai, rental bicycles are the only solution to meet efficiently the need for last mile to public transport, which is why they are celebrating such great success there. A solar module makes it possible to integrate the bicycles into Smart City concepts. That’s why we expect further growth,” says Robert Händel, CEO of OPES Solutions. 

    New production process

    Despite the strong growth in production volumes, there is no standardized production equipment available on the market for compact off-grid modules that could deliver the required quality at favorable prices. In particular, the 36+ solder points per module for 12V systems make mass production and quality control more difficult. For its OPES PPS solar modules, the company developed a unique automated production process that combines proven PCB manufacturing technology, as used in the electronics industry. This combination also makes it possible to use cost-effective crystalline standard cells and to dispense with comparatively expensive IBC cells.

    “We achieve high throughputs in the laminators by initially producing larger module surfaces. Directly after lamination, we cut automatically smaller modules with an output of 5 watts and drill the required precision holes in automated stations,” adds Händel. 

    Already during lamination, the particularly light and unbreakable modules are provided with a resistant surface that is characterized by a non-stick coating. This prevents the modules from being covered by advertising stickers.

    HiDM All Black is a high-density module of up to 420W with a very appealing homogeneous black surface. It is an ideal solution for residential rooftop installations. By maximizing the light absorption area, the module efficiency can reach up to 20.37%.

    Both Canadian Solar’s poly and mono modules have very low LeTID (light and elevated temperature-induced degradation) based on the third party testing.
