In Short : Saudi energy firm Alfanar plans to enter India’s green hydrogen market but awaits clear policy and offtake mechanisms. With global experience in Egypt and Chile, and 506.5 MW wind capacity in India, Alfanar seeks stable regulations like long-term PPAs. Its entry could boost India’s hydrogen ambitions, aligning with Alfanar’s global push for sustainable energy solutions.

In Detail : Saudi energy company Alfanar is preparing to enter India’s green hydrogen sector but is awaiting clearer policy signals and regulatory frameworks. The firm emphasizes the need for stable offtake agreements, similar to those that support India’s renewable energy market, to ensure project viability and attract investment.

Alfanar has significant experience internationally, having developed green hydrogen and ammonia projects in countries like Egypt and Chile. The company’s expertise includes a \$3.5 billion green ammonia facility in Egypt, which produces 500,000 tons of green ammonia annually using renewable energy sources.

In India, Alfanar currently operates 506.5 MW of wind power capacity in Gujarat, with another 50 MW under construction. The company focuses on hybrid projects combining wind and solar energy, along with energy storage solutions, to strengthen its clean energy portfolio in the region.

The CEO of Alfanar Global Development – India, Mohammed Irfan, noted that India’s green hydrogen market needs assured offtake agreements to provide certainty for investors. Unlike renewable power projects backed by long-term power purchase agreements, the green hydrogen sector is still developing mechanisms for guaranteed demand.

Alfanar is also active in other global sustainability projects, including a sustainable aviation fuel plant in the UK’s Teesside region. This plant is expected to produce over 180 million liters of sustainable fuel annually, contributing to carbon emissions reduction in the aviation industry.

The company’s planned expansion into India’s green hydrogen space aligns with its broader strategy to support the global energy transition. By leveraging its international experience, Alfanar aims to help India advance its green hydrogen ambitions while promoting sustainable energy solutions worldwide.
